Cisco Becoming a Server Vendor?

While skimming through my pile of Network World magazines, I came across this interesting article. Apparently, Cisco is going to begin manufacturing servers, starting with one codenamed "California Server." This will tromp all over the partner relationship they have with HP and IBM...but why not? I'd buy it just for the Cisco logo.

I'm anxious to see what advantages Cisco will integrate into the server. I'm sure many sweet proprietary solutions could be had with a Cisco server integrating into a Cisco switch/router platform.

When's the Cisco laptop come out?

IF they use the same strategy as having almost more exceptions than rules... I prefer to keep what's already in the market

project california will be big...

It will be interesting to see if cisco introduces a certification track for this. The article says the current word on the street is x86 linux based machines. Cisco Linux certs anyone?

Jeremy,

I know this message does not belong to this post, but i am curious if you will be updating cbt nuggets for cipt to 6.0/7.0 call manager versions, probably similar to having done for cvoice 6.0

You instruction approach is awesome..
thanks a ton for the wonderful nugget studying experience..

Jeremy,

I would love to see that era when we will have Cisco Laptop.

Off the topic, I am a big fan of your nuggets and can hardly wait for CIPT 7.0.

A cisco server running IOS would be great, LOL. Or at least some flavor of it.

JC, actually let me say that it is not correct info. Cisco is not going into server arena with Project California.
Project C will drasticly change(for better offcourse) the Data Center's planning, design and hardware requirements of the SERVERS. In short you will need less cabling, less power, less rack space and most of all, you will need less number of servers (i cannot go into details at this time).
Also you hear something special about the "new thing" from the major Chip maker.

Kane you've got me curious. What's the "new thing" from the major chip maker?

I work for a very large organisation in the UK.
We had an interesting meeting with Cisco last week as we are building a new data centre.

Cisco has recomended a "unified fabric" solution in the DC to rid much of the cabling (FCoE). FCIP, Network Comm's and out-of-band will be consolidated into one type of media at 10Gbps per server. This is run over the Nexus family of switches and consolidates much of the DC Cabling. Cisco tell me that this is cutting edge technlogy and it looks like were going ahead with it.

I wonder if this has anything to do with this project??

This definately sounds like this! :)

Less Servers: Cisco own part of VMWare

Main Chip Maker: Cisco were telling me about working with intel on Project Nehalem - The I7 core chip.

Sounds like Cisco have got quite a plan indeed....

Carlton, didn't the Cisco host ask you, Not to say or disclose anything about the Nexsus Fabric extender and the Intel project, untill both Cisco and Intel announce it ?

Posted by: Kaka Gee at March 16, 2009 10:20 PM

Kaka - No he didn't, although something is telling me that he probably should have. I won't go into more details either...

Look's like they have made the initial statement last night.

Actually I am not happy with this trend. Cisco really starts to produce some kind of servers (maybe we have to say some kind of mini computers).
I also receive some Cisco white papers for Cisco's security equipments. They are selling cameras & control units with Cisco brand.
Maybe I am old minded. I miss the days of pure R&S.
