Solarwinds Takes Over Kiwi!

Noooooooooo!

I just received the email that Solarwinds has purchased Kiwi (producer of the Syslog and CatTools products). I'm a huge fan of Kiwi because they are low cost (free, in some cases) and just kind of "scrappy." Fun products to use. Hopefully Solarwinds does not disband these small-business products in favor of the mother-of-all Orion product (great product, way too expensive for smaller companies).

If you go to http://www.solarwinds.com/products/freetools/ you can see the following free Kiwi products:
NEW! Free Kiwi Syslog Server
NEW! Free Kiwi CatTools

Agreed. "Scrappy" is a great word to describe the feel I got from Kiwi. Great tools. Guess we'll upgrade to the latest and greatest before it disappears.

Note, "free" in this case means watered down. Nothing new there. There's still a paid for version which gets you all the stuff you really need.

Solarwinds has a history of offering some free tools, so we might be ok. But definitely upgrade to the newest version before it's too late.

I think Solarwinds, who filed for IPO early last year, is feeling the heat from other vendors like PacketTrap Networks with their Perspective product and Ipswitch with What's Up Gold. PacketTrap I know has and continues to bundle many of the Kiwi syslog and config backup features into the core product. You can bet Solarwinds will do the same.

The network management vendors are moving aggressively as new technologies like virtualization, VoIP, SaaS, etc are finally reaching mass adoption and having profound impact on network performance. Top it off with IT teams having to learn this new stuff, it is ripe for intelligent software.

Well, I agree that the guys from Kiwi are a cool and scrappy bunch but wrt SolarWinds getting rid of these tools or them disappearing - it just plain ain't gonna happen, and you can quote me on that...

Thanks Josh - good to have a Solarwinds rep to quote. I'm holding you to it! :)

Kiwi is indeed one of the "must have" little tools for network engineers. I like the configuration backup feature since it comes handy for a big router/switches network.
