CCNA Voice Exam Debrief

Alright, this afternoon I took the CCNA Voice exam (aka Implementing Cisco IOS Unified Communications, 640-460). While I completely loathe brain dumps, I am all for getting a good idea of focus areas and the general feel for the exam, so that's what I'll give you here.

The CCNA Voice exam will have between 60-70 questions according to the official Cisco website. My exam was dead in the middle with 65 questions. The current passing score (which changes over time) will be somewhere around a low B letter grade.

Here's a general summary of what I encountered:

  • Plenty of questions on the traditional voice world, TDM technology, analog to digital voice conversion, signaling, etc...
  • Only one simulation...but it was a solid, "can you set this up" scenario. It uses the new simulation style that I first saw on the 640-802 CCNA exam - you can drag & drop multiple windows in your screen area, resize windows, and so on...real nice improvement to the old simulation questions (seen in the exam tutorial...the exam tutorial doesn't yet show this new simulation style)
  • Plenty of "exhibit" style questions where you see the UC500 interface, or configuration example and have to interpret the output, find a missing command, or choose what tabs you would click on to configure such-and-such.
  • LOTS of drag-and-drop questions (terminology, network diagram, call flows, etc...)
  • Plenty of multiple choice style questions, but worded in more of a "can you apply your knowledge" rather than "did you memorize the factoid from the book" way.
By far, most of my questions were related to either CME or Traditional Voice technology. While I was definitely more impressed with the new CCNA exam (640-802) in terms of the scope of knowledge, difficulty, and the requirement to "really know your stuff" in order to pass, the CCNA Voice exam is in the same category. I really expected more simulation quesitons...Perhaps future exams will add more.

If you take the exam, I'd love to know your experience - tack it on to this post. Keep in mind that any information that I consider "brain dump-ish" (including questions, answers to questions, exact information on simulation(s), etc...) will be absolutely, immediately deleted...and your computer will immediately get a virus that causes it to melt before your very eyes.

"While I completely loathe brain dumps, I am all for getting a good idea of focus areas and the general feel for the exam"

Unfortunately, Cisco doesn't agree with you:

Cisco Career Certifications and Confidentiality Agreement

"You agree that the contents of the exam are confidential and that the disclosure of that information could compromise the integrity of the Program and of Certifications. Cisco makes exams available to you solely to test your knowledge of the exam subject matter for which you seek Certification. You are expressly prohibited from disclosing, publishing, reproducing, or transmitting any exam and any related information including, without limitation, questions, answers, worksheets, computations, drawings, diagrams, length or number of exam segments or questions, or any communication, including oral communication regarding or related to the exam (known collectively as “Proprietary Information”), in whole or in part, in any form or by any means, oral or written, electronic or mechanical, for any purpose, without the prior express written permission of Cisco."

The irony is so delicious I think I need a spoon to eat it all up.

Hey! JC,

Im more interested in the materials you used to prepare for the CCNA Voice exam. so can you please provide me with the details of the materials like study guides or sum'tin! The official Cisco press study guide for CCNA voice is not due out till november and I don'y know what to do really! I have recently just passed my CCNA 640-802, and I must tell you that exam was not really easy! I passed on the 3rd attempt! ( But I am proud I did it my way!-the hard way and now I now my stuff!) I used the Cisco press books and also the sybex book by Todd Lammle (the best one by mile IMHO!!!) and a bit of Bryant's CCNA study guide.
I have actually started to get the materials for my CCNP when cisco released these CCNA concentrations and that threw me in the ocean of confusion as to what to do next! It was nice to read from you how you got on with the CCNA voice exam!. I stumbled upon this blog site from one other CCIE candidate's site http://ccie-in-3-months.blogspot.com/

Looking forward to reading from you!
cheers
Abdul

What! Gateways and Gatekeepers and TUC CBT videos moved to 2009! Why!?

Posted by: Roy at July 12, 2008 10:45 AM

Hi Jeremy

Top CBT Nugget videos you've made!

One question.. what program and pen do you use to do your freehand drawings?

Thanks.

JC,

I am a bit surprised that just because CCNA Voice was released that CbtNuggets put off the CCVP videos for next year.

On the other hand cant wait for learning CME good, all the single details, as the basic setup is peace of cake. Telephony-service setup...

JC,

I am looking forward to the release of the CCNA Voice cbtnuggets. I have a lot of gray areas regarding deploying ccme and cue, particularly in the areas of downloading files for the cisco ip phones, licensing issues etc...

I truse this will be top quality as always.

I took and passed as well. I think if you use the study materials for the current IPTX exam and add a bit of UC500 studying, (Cisco Configuration assistant)you will be fine.

I am studying for the new CCNA Voice Exam (IIUC 640-460). In regard to putting together a voice lab, I have a UC520, but most of the configurations in the book illustrate ISRs such as a 2801. Does anyone who has taken the exam believe that I should obtain an ISR 2801 to study for the exam, or if the UC520 will suffice? Any feedback is most welcomed. Thanks

I passed my CCNA Voice today 961/1000. I attended a week long training event for work last week. It was a great, much needed study session since I knew squat about voice.

The exam wasn't really hard, granted you know what you are doing. As with the regular CCNA, it's 95% real world and troubleshooting and about 5% theory.

The sim wasn't too bad (thank goodness for partial credit though...lot of stuff to do in it)

I did comment to Cisco on my exam about a couple questions that didn't really seem to make any sense to me. I completely knew how to answer the questions correctly, but the way they wanted the answer was just odd (sorry, trying not to brain dump).

You have very interesting blog!

Just took and passed the 640-460 exam and was really disappointed in the content.

Lots of analog stuff, (trying not to give away any actual content info) and a gui driven sim. I got the standard amount of questions and the passing score required was as outlined by Jeremy earlier in this thread.

I took this exam after passing Cvoice, CIPT and QOS only because I have to teach it, and based on the content in my test and (IMO) there is little likelihood that someone could actually install and support even a small voice installation. I retook the CCNA (640-802) not too long ago and found it to exremely thorough.

Cisco needs to take another look at the content of this exam.

This by far was the best CBT video training I have ever seen. Such a great product. Keep it coming!

Hello Mr. Jeremy, You are my sir and i am your student, i have passed CCNA today with your help, i watched your vedios of ICND 1 and ICND 2 and took lot of knowledge. Now my question is : What next step i have to take in certification? I want to take step in CCNA SECURITY or CCNA VOICE but now i cannot take final decision, so sir please help me to take final decision, you can mail me on this E-mail address. This is urgent, please reply me as soon as possible. Thanks in advance. Your student M.A.MALIK

I took the exam today (yes on Sunday) and passed it.
JC i read your CCNA Voice guide (Cisco Press) to prepare for it. Since it was the first edition, it was not surprising, that it has lots of errors(eg, page 140, command is missing the "ip" after option 150). Some post dial peers have digit manipulation, but some don't. there are many others i can send you.
i hope those errors would be fixed in the next edition.
Also QoS is not explained, as it should be. Also i was taken back by the itty bitty explantion of ISTP.
But still a great book. I think any "Hands on" Cisco guy would really benefit from this book, whereas any "Certificate-aholic" would not, which sadly bulk of the cisco certified are.

Hi Mr. Cioara!

First of all, I would like to thank you for your “help” studying for my CCNA exam. I used your book from Exam Cram and Measure up and passed it on my first try.
Now my company is asking me to take the IIUC(2)(642-145) exam and I’m a little bit confused here and I’m hopping you can help me. Is this the second part of the CCNA Voice 640-460 exam? Is it a new version of the 640-460? I saw on Cisco’s website that for this exam I should take the same course as the CCNA voice exam. Is this correct?
Right now I bought your book CCNA Voice Official Exam Certification Guide (Cisco press 2nd edition March 2009) but I want to be sure which book to study.

Thanks for your help.

I have just started studying for the ccna-voice exams. Please, can you tell me the best book to buy to pass it? How long did you study to pass the exam?
Tony

Just want to say thanks Jeremy, I just passed my CCNA Voice exam with only your Cisco Press book and the CBT Nuggets videos. I am mainly an enterprise Cisco voice guy with the Call Managers and so on so I've actually had next to no experience with the actually CME and CUE apps, though I managed to do fine on the exam.

Thanks!

i just passed the ccnav exam yesterday, your book and the cbt nuggets did the trick for me, your description of the test i think is very accurate, in my case had a lot of question about the UC500. Thanks !!

Hello everyone,
First of all I'd like to thank You Jeremy for awesome CBT nuggets series, which helped me a lot obtaining my CCNA certification. Now as I'm half way done with CCNP, I started to think about CCVP. I have a little question about CCNA voice certification, cisco web page shows two ways of obtaining CCNA voice, which is a pre-requisite for CCVP track. My question is: Is it even worth to take IIUC if you think of going on with CCVP and obtaining CVoice 6.0 (which will give you CCNA voice certificate aswell) ?

This brings back to mind this thing my mother would always say...
Of course it is definitely not appropriate just now...
