CCNA Update
Well, it looks as though Cisco has finally done a MAJOR update to their famous CCNA program. This update will indeed make it more difficult to attain a CCNA...and for good reason! Many people are just getting their CCNA certification and stopping (not moving on to the CCNP, CCSP, or whatever). So...Cisco decided, if that's all your going to do, then we'll make it so you really have an idea of what you're doing!
I've been contracted to write the new CCNA Exam Cram / Exam Prep series and to record the new CBTNuggets CCNA series, so I've been researching what is new for quite some time...Here's the scoop:
The CCNA certification has been split into two exams: ICND1 and ICND2. Because they have added so much information, Cisco has released a lower-level cert to the CCNA: the Cisco Certified Entry Level Tech (CCENT). If you pass the ICND1 exam, you get this new certification. Passing ICND1 and ICND2 gives you the CCNA certification.
ICND1 really focuses on the smaller network environment. You'll need to know the basics of routing, switching, and wireless technology. Also new to the scene is the Cisco Security Device Manager (SDM) graphic interface for managing your routers. Most of what the CCENT-certified person is able to do is done in the GUI. Command-line is typically used for verification.
ICND2 is where the rubber meets the road. Much of what used to be only in the CCNP track has moved into this exam - it is primarily focused around things like Access-lists, VLANs, Rapid STP, and NAT. Not to mention some advanced routing protocol config (OSPF / EIGRP).
So, my suggestion? If you haven't gotten your CCNA, get it soon! The current exams expire on November 6th. After that, it will be much more difficult to get your CCNA.
You can get more info about any of these tests from Cisco's CCNA Certification website: http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/le2/le0/le9/learning_certification_type_home.html

Hi Jeremy, i found your blog accidentaly. I was just looking for some info regarding policy-based nat configurations on PIX.
Basically i want to thank for your CBT Nuggets, i learned ISA 2004 with that nugget, it was VERY helpfull, interactive and interesting, you did a great job, me and my friends enjoyed that material a lot!
Right i'm working in a Juniper reseller company, so i get to work a lot with Juniper (former Netscreen) firewalls, personally i think they are much more productive and easier to work with than cisco Pix. Anyway i'm focusing on on cisco, microsoft and juniper, and I hope more CBT Nuggets from you in the future!
P.S.: If you need any Juniper info i will be more than happy to provide it to you, Just contact me on my email.

Hi Jeremy,
My name is Yagnesh and i am from India. I am currently preparing for my CCNA. Also i am working as a systems engineer. I would like to know if its possible anyhow to combine the bandwidth of two or more PPPoE ADSL connection into one and use it as if it was a single high speed internet. I thought of putting 2 ADSL modem connecting to internet at similar bandwidth connected to a Router and the same router connects to a cisco switch. So what i would do is give all my pc gateway ip of the interface of router to which switch connects. Pls guide me on this.

Hi Jeremy,
well I guess I'm another in a growing army of Ciaoraites that just passed my CCNA this afternoon !

Jeremey you do a fantastic job on the Cisco material. I love your enthusiastic style as well as picking up those tiny helpful little tid bits like the "do" command whilst in global config mode! I mean how cool is that! Sounds silly but makes life alot quicker to configure a switch/router when you know all the handy shortcuts!!

Jeremy,
I am here at work and I am watching the BCMSN CBT Nugget videos, specifically the wireless one and in it you mentioned that you live out in the PHX area of Arizona. I am looking to move out there early next year and wanted to know maybe if you would be able to share with me your insights into the companies in that area or even what the IT industry is like? I would very much appreciate any advice you would be able to share with me about the Greater Phoenix area. Thanks!

I watched a few of the CBT Nuggets videos. These are simply the best.
In the video, you asked if someone could find what the H means in the show ip eigrp command output. Might it mean H as in hierarchy? hierarchical order maybe?

Hello Jeremy, it's Jeremy. I am glad cisco has made it a bit more tough for ccna. It's a good thing!!!
I have looked around for quite a while and talked to many people. A few things people have been having problems with is... Figuring out what to buy for CCNA... equipment.. and how to hook it up.. Now I have a general idea on how to hook everything up, but what about all the add on cards and whatnot.
I still am looking for a list of stuff to get... I get way to excited and just start buying stuff... I am contemplating on buying an ASA5505.. I just got a Cisco 3640 and a 3550. I am still trying to figure out what to add to this. I will be using your CCENT videos and CCNA ones as well... Work gets them for me... I would love if you could help out with this... Maybe post a good blog on it. My offer to you is... I am a unix geek, so as I herd in the video's you posted, you are a windows user.. If you ever need any help with any of your Unix stuff, feel free to ask.
If you could shoot me an email back, that would be great. The email that's attached is a disposable address, it will forward email sent to that address to my real address for 30 days, then it gets trashed. But by then, most people have my regular one. "Security reasons".. dont need any porn in the inbox.
But I am super excited to learn all this cisco stuff and networking stuff. It keeps me up all night reading and learning!!!
Your books are great too. So thank you from a students perspective, for creating such a good video series, and good books and everything else. Its great to see someone so excited and in love with what they do.
Thanks
Jeremy

I am glad they made the CCNA harder to attain, it now means my CCNA is worth more than what it would have been if I passed it the first time round :D

Hi Jeremy,
It's really difficult to put into words my thanks for your cbtnuggets videos on the CCNA. I re-took my ICND2 last Friday and passed with a score of 903. I had previously studied from the Cisco book but found this a bit tedious and difficult to take in. Your videos explained all technicalities brilliantly, I have shown my work collegues and they love them too. Once it has really sunk in that I have passed the CCNA I will definately use your videos to help me towards my CCNP. Your understanding and the enthusisiam you have is extrodinary, fixing faults during the videos is brilliant to see. Keep up the fantastic work.

Jeremy,
I went through and did the entire four-course sequence of CCNA Academy classes at my local community college, and the books were too often not very effective at explaining things.
The academy classes allowed me direct access to expensive equipment that I would not otherwise not have had access to, and I felt like the labs were done very well.
Before I went to take the CCNA cert, I bought virtually every Cisco book I could find, to prepare me for the test, but when I actually sat down to take the test, I scored an 813, which failed by just 12 points (the cutoff was 825).
After failing that first time, I went back through the bookstore CCNA books, and I picked up a copy of the very nondescript Exam Cram CCNA Exam Prep book that you wrote, and it was amazing.
The book cover doesn't look like much, but your means of explaining (and getting things factually correct) was light-years better than all the other books I went through -- and you can believe me when I say that I went through them ALL.
After reading your book (and finally understanding things totally), I enrolled in a CCNA study website for a month and a half, and rescheduled my CCNA certification exam.
...And this time, I scored a 916 out of 1,000 -- over a 100-point improvement on my score of just two months' prior.
As far as I'm concerned, your book got me that CCNA, Jeremy. You really do know your stuff. You da man.
