My First Rant...

I'm not one given to rants, but it's been about three weeks now, and I'm still mad...so now I've got to say something about it. Ever since I've been in the Cisco world, I've subscribed to Packet Magazine. It's a free magazine from Cisco that is just full of great stuff. In one of the more recent issues of Packet, they mentioned, "Cisco is now moving to a unified system where everything is accessible from one place, so we figured this is a good time to mention that we're going to move our magazine online...if you still want the print issues, you'll have to pay for it."

So, the end of free Packet magazine (print edition) has come under the gloss of "unified networks." The digital edition of Packet is still free, but...well, am I behind in the times in saying, "I DON'T LIKE READING MAGAZINES ON MY PC!"???

I have no point in this post, other than to take a survey: is there ANYONE out there that would rather have a digital copy of this magazine rather than a print edition? Please satisfy my curiosity and tell me why!

...and yes, I did pay for the Packet magazine subscription. I'm such a sucker.

I LOVE books. I just can't have enough of them. I always find myself looking into books, learning what the authors have done, how they do it, and why. I actually "relax" at a Borders or Barnes&Noble bookstore, in their technology sect... [Read More]

I hate reading magazines online. I stare at a screen enough in a day. I deceived to pay for the print edition...

I agree - I despise reading lengthy articles on my PC. I frequently print things out to read them. And in agreement with Ben, we stare at our PC's all day, who wants to "relax" in front of them! My office chair isn't as comfortable as my couch, and I definitely do not have anywhere to elevate my feet! :o) The printed edition will also be visiting my mailbox!

I can't stand reading long articles online, so I tend to print anything over 5 pages or so.

Since I usually read magazines at home in the La-Z-Boy, I also ponied up some cash to Cisco for the print version of Packet.

I agree with you but then again what the heck am I doing reading your ONLINE blog for? When are you going to send me a hard copy in the mail. :)

I don't mind reading online. I find it easier to read the PDF version of my CCIE book since I have my laptop with me anyway. However, I also have paid for a Packet subscription. I find the online interface clumsy and annoying. I can't seem to find what I want and have to zoom in too much to read it. I know Cisco is trying to make the online issue appear like the real thing, but I would prefer a good old pdf.

I agree. I like to have things in print. Don't get me wrong, I like the online versions, as long as I can take them "offline" for fast searching/indexing.

I was disappointed as well, to see that Packet magazine required a subscription. The magazine was of high-quality print, looks good as side-reading in your office, and I like highlighting and note taking in the margins.

Sigh. Oh well. Waddya going to do?

There's something about good old fashioned PAPER! :)
